The Power of Female Relationships

You know that saying “Sistas before Mistas”... well this phrase was created for a reason- and is something we highly recommend you follow. If you haven’t experienced a difficult break up yet or have had a deal with a personal issue that only another woman would understand, then you’re lucky. But given that we live in a world with such unavoidable issues waiting to happen, it’s important to take care of your female relationships and keep them nearby. At the end of the day, it’s your close female friendships that will be there for you- without feeling a sense of belonging or connectedness, many women risk feeling anxious, depressed and alienated. To that end, the strongest predictor for creating a fulfilled life is building healthy relationships with others — at home, at work and in the community- especially other women.

Look around you, in your world and in the media- close, honest, female relationships are everywhere. Take a look at Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, or Amy Poehler and Tina Fey; these relationships are truly goals that I most definitely want to achieve. But why is it that these relationships are so powerful and important- truth is, there’s more to it than just the accessibility and appearance of it. According to a study by Shelley Taylor, when life becomes challenging, women seek out friendships with other women as a means of regulating stress levels. A common female stress response is to “tend and befriend.” That is, when women become stressed, their immediate response is to nurture those around them and reach out to others.

At the end of the day, we as women must stick together and be there for one another. There’s a reason we’ve been given so much power and there’s a reason why we’re such great leaders! We know how to care for one another, and share compassion to those in need. So hold onto those female relationships; they truly are immensely important to you and to those around you. #thefutureisfemale
